Where to stay: areas, prices, rules and booking tactics

15 min read · last checked 2026-10-22 · by the Uncle Panda team

Which neighbourhoods to stay in, what hotels charged during the fair, hotel shuttles, police registration and how to book.

Phase 2 runs Fri Oct 23 to Tue Oct 27 and Phase 3 runs Sat Oct 31 to Wed Nov 4, with changeover days Oct 28-30 in between. Prices below were gathered by Oct 21, 2026 for those two phases. They are not live booking quotes.

At a glance

  • Rooms are short. The Guangzhou Hotel Association estimated 310,000+ overseas buyers plus 200,000 domestic exhibitors competing for only about 80,000 rooms in and around Pazhou (association estimate as reported; treat as an order of magnitude).
  • Expect a fair-week multiple, not a fixed price. Media price checks across recent editions show citywide rates at 2-4x normal and walking-distance Pazhou hotels at 3-5x. On P1 opening day (Oct 15) hotels within 2 km of the venue were mostly above RMB 1,000/night and the Westin was about RMB 4,000 (P1 snapshot, P2/P3 may differ) (not confirmed).
  • Distance decays the premium. Kecun, 2-3 stops west on Line 8, was reported at RMB 700-1,000+ on P1 opening day, about half the Pazhou price, about 10 minutes away with no transfer (not confirmed).
  • Price rules exist this edition. Guangzhou's market regulator warned hotels (Sep 16 letter) not to raise prices after check-in or unilaterally cancel or reprice confirmed bookings, and on Oct 14 summoned 35 key hotels and the hotel association. It is a transparency and no-repricing order, not a published price ceiling.
  • Hotels register you with police; you do not. If you stay anywhere other than a hotel (apartment, friend's flat, factory dorm), you or your host must register within 24 hours, and this can now be done online.
  • "Free shuttle" needs checking. Many hotels run fair shuttles, but schedules, seat limits and the number of days vary; one reported shuttle broke down on the elevated road on a P1 morning.
  • Muslim-friendly features are documented for a handful of downtown hotels (prayer room, prayer rugs, Qibla markers, halal dining), mostly from spring 2026 hotel releases. No certified "halal hotel" list was found.

5.1 Choosing an area

The venue has four Areas: A (Halls 1-8), B (Halls 9-13), C (Halls 14-16, south of Xingang East Road) and D (Halls 17-20, west end). Metro access: Line 8 Xingangdong (新港东) Exit A for Gate 6 (Areas A and D); Line 8 Pazhou (琶洲) Exits A/B for Gate 4 and Line 11 Pazhou Exits E/F for Gate 3 (Area B); Line 8 Pazhou Exit C, about 300 m west, for Area C. Line 8 to Line 11 at Pazhou is an outside-station transfer via a covered walkway and blue transfer gates. Match your hotel to your Area: Phase 2 kitchenware and ceramics are mostly in Area A, building materials and furniture in Area B, household items in Area C, gifts and home decor in Area D. Phase 3 apparel and shoes are in Area A, food, pets and personal care in Area B, home textiles in Area C, toys and bags in Area D.

Phase 2 vs Phase 3

  • P2 (Oct 23-27) opens on a Friday right after the Oct 20-22 changeover. One trade report says gap-day bookings were peak time, with 5-star bookings up 34% and White Swan above 95% (marketing source). A hotel revenue piece instead describes "brief troughs" on gap days. Both may be true for different hotel tiers. Check live rates for your exact P2 nights before booking.
  • P3 (Oct 31-Nov 4) opens on a Saturday after the Oct 28-30 changeover. Hotel sales comments targeting P3 quoted RMB 638 (two breakfasts plus shuttle, under 10 min) and RMB 438 (two breakfasts plus coach, about 35 min) for unnamed hotels (not confirmed). A Phase 3 hotel ad explicitly says it accepts foreign guests, which tells you not all do or not all say so.
  • Peak nights: across recent editions, the most expensive nights were the two days before each phase opens and the final night; the break between phases was cheaper. A commenter says prices normalise between phases but are often at least double on exhibition days, and another said their hotel's rate would triple the next day.

5.2 Reported price levels (with dates)

These are reported snapshots, not quotes. Most are from P1 opening day (Oct 15). No live P2/P3 rates were captured.

Budgets under RMB 1,000. Buyers asking about EUR 40-50 or USD 50 a night near the fair were told this is unrealistic; one 2025 answer suggested USD 80-100 a room. A buyer looking for RMB 300-500 with metro, halal food and a gym was pointed to Country Inn & Suites by Radisson on Wushan Road, recalled at roughly RMB 450 from May 2026 (uncertain). Under RMB 1,000 in fair week, the evidence points to: Kecun/Chigang chains, shuttle hotels or apartment hotels further out, or Foshan with a coach. A Phase 1 OTA screenshot also showed two airport hotels with free terminal shuttles at RMB 236 and 363 for Oct 17-18; they suit a late arrival or early flight, not a daily commute (an airport hotel's venue shuttle is reported at about 40 min). Expect small rooms at the cheap end: one buyer reported a Hanting room under 10 m². Huazhu's long-stay channel quotes monthly rentals from RMB 1,500-2,000 (cleaning RMB 45/hour), but fair-period availability is unknown.

5.3 Official price rules and where to complain

  • Sep 16 warning letter from Guangzhou's market regulator: no price rises after check-in, no unilateral cancelling or repricing of confirmed online bookings during the fair, all fees posted. Post-booking price hikes or unilateral cancellations are described as illegal under this letter.
  • Oct 14 summons: city and Haizhu market regulators summoned 35 key hotels and the Hotel Industry Association, requiring transparent pricing and banning unauthorised surges, online/offline price gaps and unfulfilled booking promises.
  • Industry code: the Guangzhou Hotels Association requires room rates and cancellation terms to be displayed on platforms and in lobbies, online/offline price parity and no hidden surcharges; association phone 020-81072506.
  • If you booked on a platform (Trip.com, Booking, Agoda, Meituan), you can claim directly against the platform.
  • What this does not mean: there is no published price cap. A hotel can legally quote RMB 4,000 for a new booking; what it cannot do is change the price of a confirmed booking or hide fees.
  • 12345: the city government hotline is cited for taxi complaints. Whether it handles hotel complaints for foreigners in English is (not confirmed).

5.4 Shuttle hotels

Shuttles are common, but read the small print. The details below come from third-party posts and hotel or district releases, not live hotel confirmations. The OTA search behind some of them was for Phase 1 dates, and the timetable example is for one named hotel only. Treat all prices, listing features and departure times as (not confirmed).

  • Documented shuttle hotels (marketing or district releases; confirm dates and timetable): Lingnan group's Garden Hotel, China Hotel, Dongfang, Baiyun International Convention Center, Pazhou Lingnan Oriental, Guangzhou Hotel, Academician Port Lingnan Oriental, Liuhua Hotel (room card) and Huadu Qiling, "mostly free"; Wuyang City Hotel (multiple daily, plus 24-hour laundromat and early breakfast); Crowne Plaza Guangzhou Window (15-20 min); Huayu Wanfu near Guangzhou East (scheduled two-way); Yuanshigang Lingnan Garden Hotel on Changzhou Island (shuttles plus airport buses and buyer registration); China Hotel on Line 2 and Line 11 with 850 rooms, shuttles, Baiyun airport check-in and HK/Macau coaches.
  • City-feature hotels for the 140th: White Swan (boat to the complex departs 08:30, first-come seats), Kempinski Residences Yuexiu (on-site buyer registration, dedicated shuttles), Narada Guangzhou (lobby 08:00 to the complex, return 17:00, book 2 days ahead) and Hilton Baiyun Airport. White Swan's "Pearl River Century" boat serves breakfast on board.
  • Association rule: partner hotels were asked to provide scheduled and on-demand Pazhou shuttles (spring 2026 release).
  • What a real timetable looks like (one hotel, image posted Oct 21 by a hotel-deal account): Nanyang King's Gate Hotel (南洋长胜酒店, Tianhe) lists hotel departures 07:00-09:00 for Phase 2 and 07:30-08:30 for Phase 3, from the hotel car park; returns 17:40-18:30 from the hotel-bus parking on Zhanchang South Road by Area B (bay B1582); no return bus on Oct 27 or Nov 4; guests only with room card; the bus leaves when full. (One report; ask your hotel for its own sheet.)
  • Known problems: one 'free shuttle' reportedly ran only 3 days or required queuing early; a P1 shuttle broke down on the elevated road and the guest went home by a very crowded metro.
  • Where it drops you: the venue map shows a dedicated "Hotel Bus Parking Lot" (酒店巴士停车点) icon. Ask the hotel which gate and Area.

Ask, in writing: pickup point, first and last departure, return times, which Area it drops at, whether seats must be booked, and on which dates it runs.

5.5 Foreigner registration and passport rules

  • Hotels do the police registration for foreign guests; since 2024 authorities state hotels may not refuse foreigners for lacking a "foreign-guest qualification". In practice, some listings still advertise "accepts foreign guests" as a feature, and buyers on Meituan/Dianping are advised to confirm a hotel can take foreigners before paying.
  • Private stays (Airbnb, apartment, friend's flat, factory dorm): register within 24 hours of arrival. Since Sep 21, 2026 this can be done online nationwide via the NIA website, the "NIA 12367" app or WeChat mini-program, or Alipay, or at a local police station; failure can bring a warning or fine. A note confirms hotels handle it and private homes need police registration.
  • Bring your original passport. You need it for hotel check-in and for badge collection.
  • If unsure whether you were registered, ask the hotel for confirmation. One long-stay traveller panicked after a hotel notice, but the thread did not show the hotel had failed.
  • Check-in/out: standard check-in 14:00 and check-out 12:00 at one Pazhou listing; fair hotels often allow early arrivals around 09:00 to store bags.

5.6 Muslim-friendly hotels (where documented)

These come from hotel or association releases dated Mar 30, 2026 (spring edition) unless noted. Confirm with the hotel that the feature is in place this week.

Crowne Plaza Guangzhou City CentreDedicated prayer room, Arabic-speaking staff, halal custom dining, Pazhou shuttles

White Swan Hotel (Shamian)Middle Eastern dishes, boat and land shuttles, buyer registration green channel
Garden HotelAll-day restaurant with Middle Eastern cuisine, on-demand fair shuttles

The Hotels Association also asked partner hotels to cover halal and Western dining and offer Arabic-speaking concierges. Buyers asking for Muslim-friendly hotels are mostly after nearby halal food plus fair access; replies favour Xiaobei near the mosques, with one warning that hotels there are older. Veteran halal-observant buyers stay near Xiaobei/Huanshi Rd and commute. See Chapter 6 for restaurants and mosques.

5.7 What hotels and hosts do and don't do

Hotels commonly offer during the fair (marketing claims, ask your hotel):

  • Extend your room key across changeover days without moving rooms; store luggage and product samples free at the bell desk with a claim ticket.
  • Hold samples for a colleague to collect for up to 7 days with written authorisation and ID.
  • Breakfast from 06:00 or take-away boxes; same-day express laundry if handed in before 10:00; 24-hour laundry at some properties.
  • Book-by-the-hour meeting rooms, typically 2-hour minimum, up to 6 people; business centres with per-page printing, scanning and 1-hour binding, workstations to 22:00.
  • Badge registration desks or kiosks at designated hotels.

What they don't do, or what to expect:

  • Food delivery riders may not come up: at the Westin, a guest had to collect deliveries downstairs.
  • Executive lounge breakfast depends on your rate or status.
  • Your private host does not automatically register you; you must, within 24 hours.

5.8 Booking tactics for late bookers

  1. Widen the radius along Line 8. Kecun/Chigang/Modiesha keep you one line from Pazhou at roughly half the price.
  2. Book refundable first, then hunt. The Sep 16 rules protect a confirmed booking from repricing; if a hotel tries, claim against the platform.
  3. Split the stay. If staying through P2 and P3, the gap nights (Oct 28-30) may be cheaper, and you can use them for factory trips.
  4. Consider serviced apartments or shuttle hotels. A late-booking group of five was pointed to Trip.com serviced apartments, shuttle hotels and Foshan. Remember the 24-hour registration if it is not a licensed hotel.
  5. Ask for the Chinese name and address of any recommended hotel; one buyer could not locate a recommended hotel by its English name.
  6. Be careful with resold bookings. Facebook members resell non-refundable fair bookings or offer free room sharing; transferability and foreign-guest registration are unverified.
  7. Official travel desk: Canton Fair International Travel Agency, +86 20 89268105, cantonfair.tour@163.net, booking.cantonfair.org.cn. Note that cantonfair.net is a third-party site, not the official cantonfair.org.cn.

Do / Don't

Do

  • Get the shuttle timetable, pickup point and drop-off gate in writing.
  • Screenshot your confirmed rate and cancellation terms.
  • Confirm the hotel takes foreign passports before prepaying on Chinese apps.
  • Register within 24 hours if you are not in a hotel.

Don't

  • Don't assume "free shuttle" means every day, every Area. At least one hotel runs no return bus on the last day of each phase.
  • Don't expect the shuttle to leave on time if it is not full; one timetable says it departs when full.
  • Don't accept a price rise after check-in.
  • Don't take pitches from strangers in Westin/Shangri-La lobbies at face value.
