Zhangjiajie
Thousands of sandstone pillars rise from the forest in Wulingyuan, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the real-life inspiration for Avatar's floating mountains.
Altitude
183 m
Best time
Apr–May, Sep–Oct
Suggested stay
2–4 days

Zhangjiajie is all about more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, listed by UNESCO in 1992. The viewpoints sit around 1,000 m up, well above the city at about 183 m, so bring a layer.
Getting around
- Wulingyuan (the National Forest Park) and Tianmen Mountain are separate areas with separate tickets.
- Eco-buses link the park gates and viewpoints. The Bailong Elevator and the cable cars are paid extras.
- Give the park at least one full day. Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain together fill it comfortably.
When to go
- April and October are the classic months. Summer brings showers and the biggest crowds.
- Avoid Chinese holidays (1–5 May, 1–7 October) if you can.
Park tickets are real-name: book with your passport number and bring the same passport. The ticket is valid for 4 days, but each entry needs a reserved gate and time slot.
Sights
The heart of the park, with pillars standing close enough to feel within reach. Look for the Southern Sky Column, officially renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain in 2010, and the First Natural Bridge.
Easy: about 2 km of footpath between viewpoints, some steps. Allow 2–2.5 hours.
Good to know
- Book park tickets with your passport and carry the original. Each entry within the 4-day validity needs its own gate and time-slot reservation.
- Fog can hide the peaks completely. Keep Tianmen Mountain and Tianzi Mountain for clear days, and switch to Golden Whip Stream or Ten-Mile Gallery when it is misty.
- Arrive around 8 AM to beat the tour groups, and keep food and plastic bags out of sight: wild monkeys grab them.
