Fenghuang
A riverside town of wooden stilt houses on the Tuo River, home of writer Shen Congwen and at its best by lantern light.
Altitude
350 m
Best time
Apr–May, Sep–Oct
Suggested stay
1–2 days

Fenghuang is an old Ming and Qing town in western Hunan, built along the Tuo River. More than half of the local people are Miao or Tujia, and the riverfront glows with lanterns after dark, which is why it is worth staying the night.
Best way to see it
- Walk the stilt houses, Hong Bridge and the stepping stones at dawn, when mist sits on the river.
- Take a boat on the Tuo River, then come back to the water in the evening for the lights.
- Add the Southern Great Wall or Furong Town if you have an extra half day.
When to go
- April to May and September to October are mild and clear.
- Summer is hot, humid and the busiest season.
Sights
Rows of wooden diaojiaolou houses lean out over the Tuo River on slim pillars. This is the classic Fenghuang view, and it changes completely between misty mornings and lantern-lit nights.
Easy riverside strolling on stone lanes.
Good to know
- Stay at least one night. The lantern-lit river after dark and the quiet, misty lanes at dawn are the best of Fenghuang, and midday is the most crowded.
- Fenghuang Ancient Town Station is on the high-speed line from Zhangjiajie (about 1 hour), but it is around 10 km from the old town, so plan a short transfer.
- Wear shoes with good grip: lanes are stone-paved with steps, and the stepping stones and riverbanks can be slippery after rain.
