Is this trip right for you?

Great for
  • Second- or third-time visitors to China, mostly 45+, who want to understand rather than tick off sights
  • Couples, two couples travelling together, or parents with adult children
  • Travellers who enjoy history, calligraphy, local markets and photography
Think twice if
  • Travellers who want ten sights a day and measure value by site count
  • Families with children under 6 – many steps and slopes, Wulong especially
  • Guests who expect shopping stops or a bus-tour schedule
  • Xi'an in four days along the 'steles and warriors' line: Terracotta Army at opening time, Shaanxi History Museum, Beilin and the city wall
  • Chengdu in four days on tea and chilli: pandas at dawn, Dujiangyan, Heming teahouse ear-cleaning and a Sichuan opera face-changing show
  • Chongqing in five days of hills and night views: Wulong's three natural bridges, the 1949 immersive show and a two-river night cruise
Best months: Jan–Jun, Sep–Dec (Sep–Nov is the best window)

Meals & local food

Breakfast is included at every hotel. Lunches and dinners are booked by your guide and paid at the table.

Xi'an
Roujiamo, biangbiang noodles, huluji chicken, lamb paomo,甑糕, chilli oil
Food here is not spicy – ask for the chilli oil on the side ('lazi ling fang'). Eat around Zhonglou Xiaoju and Sajinqiao rather than the main Huimin Street.
Chengdu
Hotpot, skewers, bobo chicken, dan dan noodles, Zhong dumplings, twice-cooked pork
Say 'mian la' or 'wei la' when ordering; a half-clear, half-red hotpot is how locals eat it.
Chongqing
Chongqing hotpot, xiaomian noodles, hot-and-sour rice noodles, maoxuewang, laziji chicken
Spicier and more numbing than Chengdu – start with 'wei la, mian huajiao' (mild, no Sichuan pepper); Cantonese and light dishes are easy to find around Jiefangbei.
Dietary needs
  • Vegetarian, allergies or no spicy food: tell your travel designer before booking
  • Your driver-guide explains your needs to each restaurant in Chinese
  • Mild dishes for kids and grandparents on request
