Gap days (Oct 28-30) and after the fair

13 min read · last checked 2026-10-22 · by the Uncle Panda team

What to do on Oct 28-30 while the halls are closed, day trips from Pazhou, and onward travel after the fair.

At a glance

  • The halls are closed to buyers on Oct 28-30 while Phase 3 is set up. The fair's food carnival also pauses on gap days.
  • Closest easy plans: Canton Tower is about 13-14 min from Pazhou on Line 8 (CNY 3-5); the 433 m deck is CNY 150, open 09:30-22:30. Pearl River cruises run about 15:00-23:00, 60-90 min, CNY 68-300.
  • Guangzhou's city government reported free one-day city tours and Pearl River night cruises for foreign buyers during the 140th edition; how to claim them was not found.
  • Foshan: about 20 min by high-speed train (CNY 10-20) or about 1 hour by Guangfo metro (CNY 8). Ancestral Temple (Zumiao) CNY 20, 08:30-18:00.
  • Zhaoqing: Guangzhou South to Zhaoqing East about 114 trains a day, 30-45 min; Seven Star Crags opens about 07:30-17:30.
  • Hong Kong by train: Guangzhou South to West Kowloon, fastest about 47 min, second class about CNY 185-215. Leaving for Hong Kong exits the mainland and uses a visa entry (not confirmed). Pakistan passport holders need a Hong Kong visa (HKD 330, about 4 weeks); Indian passport holders need free online pre-arrival registration.
  • The 240-hour visa-free transit covers 57 countries only. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, the Philippines and Turkey are not on the list.
  • Post-fair by high-speed rail from Guangzhou: Guilin about 2h07m-2h30m (second class about CNY 165); Zhangjiajie about 5h28m+ (about CNY 506-648); Kunming about 6.5-9 h (about CNY 517.5-682); Shanghai from about 6h11m (about CNY 800-942).

1. What the gap is, and who should use it

Phase 2 ends Oct 27 and Phase 3 opens Oct 31; Oct 28-30 is changeover and the halls are closed to buyers. Hotels are reported to dip in occupancy on gap days, which some long-stay buyers use to negotiate rates or to schedule factory trips. Exhibitor staff say they need 2-3 days to recover after a phase, so a slow first gap day is reasonable.

Three ways buyers use the gap:

  1. Factory visits and wholesale markets (Chapter 10). Factories and markets keep working on weekdays.
  2. A nearby day trip (this chapter).
  3. A Hong Kong trade show: the HK Mega Show is described as scheduling a second part on Oct 27-29 at HKCEC to catch Canton Fair buyers (not confirmed).

Buyer posts on social media show what people actually ask for: a short, timed evening plan rather than a long attraction list, and clear, itemised day-trip prices.

2. Half-day plans from Pazhou

Times are from Pazhou unless noted. "Estimate" means built from the travel time and opening hours, not measured.

Metro tips: single fares CNY 2-20; 24-hour pass CNY 20, 72-hour pass CNY 50 (clock starts at first entry). Guangzhou metro accepts direct taps of Mastercard, Amex, Visa and JCB. Line 8 runs about 06:00-23:00.

Calendar: Chen Clan Academy, Zhenhai Tower and Foshan's Xiao Market close on Mondays. That matters on Oct 26 and Nov 2 (Mondays), not on gap days.

3. Full-day plans

Foshan (佛山), culture day

  • Getting there: about 30 km; high-speed train about 20 min, CNY 10-20; Guangfo metro about 1 h, CNY 8; taxi about 1 h, CNY 90-100. Zumiao station Exit D on the Guangfo Line is 2-5 min on foot from the temple; Foshan metro fares CNY 2-8, payable by Alipay/WeChat QR or contactless bank card.
  • Ancestral Temple (祖庙): 08:30-18:00, last ticket 17:30, adult CNY 20. Inside are the Wong Fei-hung memorial hall and Ip Man hall. Lion dance shows are listed for weekends and holidays at 10:00, 14:15 and 15:30; weekday times were not given, so do not count on a show on Oct 28-30. Weekdays are reported to be not too crowded.
  • Free stops: Lingnan Tiandi, right outside the temple's back gate; Renwei Old Street, still lived in; Zhongshan Park. Xiao Market inside Lingnan Tiandi opens 13:00 on weekdays.
  • Suggested walking order from a local note: Zumiao, Lingnan Tiandi, Xiao Market, Xianxing bookshop, Lingnan Post Office, Jian's Villa, Foshan flower wall, Renwei Old Street.
  • Faster version including Shunde: Qinghui Garden (Shunde), snacks, Zumiao, Lingnan Tiandi, Zhongshan Park, Nanfeng Ancient Kiln. Nanfeng Ancient Kiln: adult CNY 25; pottery experiences.
  • Food picks named by locals (no halal status given): double-skin milk pudding, sesame paste, beef offal, Shunde raw fish.
  • Private day-tour benchmark: USD 419 per person for 1 traveller, USD 229 for 2-3, USD 139 for 4-5.
  • Suits: buyers who want one relaxed culture day; easy to combine with a Foshan factory or furniture mall the next day (Chapter 10).

Zhaoqing (肇庆), scenery day

  • Getting there: Guangzhou South to Zhaoqing East, about 114 G/D/C trains a day (06:37-21:28), 30-45 min, second class about USD 8, first about USD 11. By car about 97 km, about 1h11m; taxi about CNY 290-350 one way (undated estimate) (not confirmed).
  • Seven Star Crags (七星岩): open about 07:30-17:30; from Zhaoqing East take bus 205 or K02 to the North Gate and walk about 10 min, or use DiDi. Arrive at the arch before 08:00 to avoid crowds. About 20 min by bike to the free Shuiyueyan viewpoint. Entry fee not found.
  • Full route from a local note (08:00-19:00, 12+ stops, about 25,000 steps): Seven Star Crags arch, Shuiyueyan, Piyun Tower, Liqiao Tower, arcade street for lunch, city museum, Gaoyao Confucian school, Yuejiang Tower, Bao Gong shrine, Baisha Longmu Temple, Shangqingwan lane, Yanqian Village for sunset. Shared bikes and walking work there.
  • Suits: fit walkers who want nature; leave early.

Shenzhen (深圳), tech and retail day

  • Getting there: Guangzhou South to Shenzhen North, fastest about 29 min, second class about CNY 74.5-94; 201 G trains a day on that pair. From Pazhou there is a direct intercity to Shenzhen Airport station, fastest about 60 min, CNY 54, tickets on 12306.
  • What foreign visitors were taken to after the fair: DJI flagship store (Nanshan), Xiaomi showroom, Shenzhen Natural History Museum, Maluan Mountain. Huaqiangbei electronics markets open about 10:00-19:00.
  • Suits: electronics and consumer-tech buyers; can be combined with a factory visit (Chapter 10).

Hong Kong (香港), only with the right papers

  • By train: Guangzhou South to West Kowloon, 141 km, fastest about 47 min, about 55-60 trains a day (06:32-21:32), second class about CNY 185-215; mainland exit and Hong Kong entry are in one building at West Kowloon. Klook shows USD 27-107 and charges refund fees of 5% (8+ days before), 30% (7 days to 48 h), 50% (48 h to 2 h); no refund within 2 h.
  • Via Shenzhen: Shenzhen North to West Kowloon 24 min, CNY 75 one way. One traveller went in via Luohu and out via Shenzhen Bay for about CNY 220 in total.
  • By ferry from Pazhou: the Pazhou ferry terminal runs services to Hong Kong airport and downtown Hong Kong; times and fares need checking with the operator.
  • In Hong Kong: WeChat Pay and Alipay work at the station and in some shops, but carry some HKD. The Central ferris wheel was HKD 20 for three rotations with a 20-30 min queue.
  • Visa cautions (read before you buy a ticket):
    • Hong Kong and mainland immigration are separate. A Hong Kong visa does not let you into the mainland, and the reverse.
    • Pakistan: Hong Kong lists Pakistan as visa required; fee HKD 330, normally about 4 weeks after complete documents. Not realistic for a gap-day trip unless already issued.
    • India: visa-free in Hong Kong for up to 14 days after free online Pre-arrival Registration; the details must match your passport exactly.
    • Bangladesh, Nigeria, Philippines, Turkey: Hong Kong entry rules not confirmed.
    • Coming back: a Hong Kong trip exits the mainland and uses a visa entry (not confirmed). A single-entry China visa may not let you back in for Phase 3. The 240-hour transit route is not available to the six nationalities above.
    • The 15-minute e-gate crossing one writer describes applied to a Chinese national with a home-return permit, not to foreign passport holders.
  • Suits: buyers with multiple-entry visas and HK business; not a casual add-on.

Chimelong (长隆), Panyu

  • Getting there: Metro Line 3/7 Hanxi Changlong Exit E, about 5 min walk to free resort shuttles.
  • Tickets: Safari Park CNY 300 normal / 350 peak; Chimelong Paradise CNY 250; circus CNY 450; Birds Park CNY 100; real-name tickets, enter with the passport used for booking
  • Suits: buyers travelling with family.

Organised day tours

  • Zengcheng "1+1" factory-and-culture day, booked at hotel desks open 18:00-20:00; Baishuizhai waterfall free for fair attendees.
  • Guangzhilv (GZL) tours to Nankunshan and Luofushan (heritage, villages, production bases). Prices not found.
  • Guangzhou promoted three themed routes for buyers ("Fashion", "Vibrant", "Street-life Guangzhou"); route details not published.

4. After the fair: 3-day templates

Facts first, then a template. Train data are from timetable sites dated 2026; fares and times change, so check 12306 or an OTA for your date (not confirmed).

Template 1: Guilin and Yangshuo, 3 days (post)

  • Day 1: morning train to Guilin (about 2-2.5 h). Guilin West station is far from the centre, about 30 min by taxi; staying near Guilin station or Elephant Trunk Hill is easier. Evening: Chuanshan Park is free and under 20 min to climb for sunset. Elephant Trunk Hill was free per one author, but many sources list a ticket (not confirmed).
  • Day 2: Li River cruise from Mopanshan pier, about 4.5 h at low water, ending at Longtoushan pier near West Street, Yangshuo; luggage allowed. Some drivers to Mopanshan demanded an extra CNY 20 on arrival; the author rebooked. Arriving at Guilin North at 10:19 for a 12:00 cruise was judged fine without heavy traffic (about 30 km).
  • Day 3: Yangshuo, then train back. Yangshuo high-speed station is far from town; the official shuttle costs CNY 20, runs about every 40 min and takes about 40 min, from the Fengming transport hub.
  • Price benchmarks (per person, "from" prices): Klook 3-day group from about USD 98; private USD 300-378; small group from about USD 406; day tours USD 56-90. Viator private from about USD 619 with hotels and some meals. Li River Cruises private from about USD 340. A Guilin-start private 3-day (rail and hotel extra): CNY 8,730 solo / 5,180 for 2 / 3,480 for 4 / 2,780 for 8 per person. A Guangzhou-start private by bullet train from GBP 559 (background only).
  • Visa: if you are on the 240-hour transit, you must stay within the permitted regions; check that Guangxi is covered for your entry port before booking.

Template 2: Zhangjiajie, 3 days (post)

  • Day 1: train from Guangzhou South, about 5.5-7 h; or fly about 1h45m.
  • Days 2-3: sightseeing, then return. Park tickets and in-park routes are not confirmed.
  • Price benchmark: Viator 3-day private from about USD 303. Group prices not found.

Template 3: Yunnan (Kunming), 3 days (post)

  • Train 6.5-9 h each way, which uses most of two days. Flying is likely better for a 3-day trip, but flight times and fares are not confirmed.

Template 4: Shanghai or Beijing by high-speed rail (post)

  • Shanghai: from about 6h11m. A Shanghai guide reports that Brazilian visitors were most impressed by a retail tour of Chinese brands and Hema's ordering and delivery. One buyer plan on Facebook combined Guangzhou, Yiwu and Guangzhou again across Oct 16-Nov 5; Yiwu rail data were not collected.
  • Beijing: about 6 h on the fastest train.
  • Treat both as onward legs rather than 3-day round trips from Guangzhou.

Group versus private: what the price data say

  • Private prices fall sharply with group size: Foshan USD 419 solo vs USD 139 per person at 4-5; Guilin CNY 8,730 solo vs CNY 2,780 per person at 8.
  • Group 3-day Guilin starts near USD 98 per person on Klook, versus USD 300+ for private.
  • Some buyers book 5-9 day packages combining Guangzhou, Chaoshan, the Greater Bay Area, Guangxi and Hunan after the fair.

5. Stay-rule cautions

  • 240-hour transit: 57 countries since Aug 20, 2026, via 65 ports; you need an ordinary passport and a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, and you must stay within the designated regions. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, the Philippines and Turkey are not on the list.
  • 24-hour transit means staying airside by default; it is not permission to attend the fair.
  • Unilateral visa-free entry has a maximum stay (15 or 30 days, depending on nationality); if Phase 2, gap days, Phase 3 and factory trips exceed it, you need an M visa.
  • Visa-free stays allow business visits and tourism, but not work, study or journalism. Do not take paid work.
  • Hainan has its own 30-day visa-free entry for 61 countries, limited to Hainan; Guilin and Xishuangbanna have a 6-day ASEAN group entry via travel agencies.
  • If you sleep outside a hotel, register with police within 24 hours.
  • Guangzhou police run a temporary port-visa service at Pazhou Port for foreigners with Canton Fair invitation letters, Oct 12-Nov 11, 2026 (tel 020-38612133); eligibility and fees need confirming.

Do / Don't

Do

  • Check Monday closures if you sightsee on Oct 26 or Nov 2.
  • Book Zhaoqing and Shenzhen trains early in the day; Seven Star Crags is best before 08:00.
  • Carry your badge for Canton Tower discounts.
  • Confirm your visa allows re-entry before any Hong Kong trip.

Don't

  • Don't plan a Hong Kong day trip on a Pakistani passport without a Hong Kong visa already in hand.
  • Don't rely on 240-hour transit if you hold an Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Nigerian, Philippine or Turkish passport.
  • Don't expect weekday lion-dance shows at Zumiao.
  • Don't pay drivers' "arrival surcharges"; rebook instead.

Still to confirm

  • Zhangjiajie second-class fare: CNY 506-648 vs CNY 503-678 (TravelChinaGuide).
  • Elephant Trunk Hill: free per one author vs paid in many sources.
  • HK Mega Show Part 2 Oct 27-29: source from March 2026; confirm 2026 dates with HKTDC.
  • Free city tours and night cruises for buyers: booking channel not found.
  • Hong Kong entry for Bangladesh, Nigeria, Philippines and Turkey passports: not confirmed.
  • Re-entry after Hong Kong: based on desk research; check your own visa's entry count.
  • Seven Star Crags entry fee, Zhangjiajie and Yunnan tour prices, Macau day-trip facts: not found.
  • Pearl River cruise piers and times for Oct 28-30 and Canton Tower prices need live confirmation.
