## Is this trip right for you?

**Great for**

- Families with children — pottery at the old kiln, a high-pole lion dance and an evening river cruise
- First-time visitors to Guangzhou who want the city, the old towns and the food in one short trip
- Senior travellers: flat city walks, short drives and hotels in one city the whole time

**Think twice if**

- You are looking for mountains, hiking or big natural scenery
- You want a beach or resort holiday
- You cannot handle hot, humid weather — June to September is sticky in Guangzhou

**Highlights**

- One day covering Xiguan's arcaded lanes, the granite Gothic Sacred Heart Cathedral, Shamian Island's colonial streets and the Canton Tower deck at 488 m
- A night cruise from Dashatou pier between the lit banks of the Pearl River
- Shunde and Foshan in two days: double-skin milk and raw fish salad, a 500-year-old wood-fired dragon kiln, and a high-pole lion dance at the Ancestral Temple

The whole trip stays low: the highest night is 20 m and the highest point is 488 m.

## Day by day

### Day 1: Guangzhou — Yongqingfang, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Shamian & Pearl River Night Cruise

**Standard plan** — start 09:00, about 8,000 steps, highest point 488 m.

- Morning in Yongqingfang: grey-brick houses, wooden bar doors, Manchu windows and Bruce Lee's ancestral home.
- Sacred Heart Cathedral (~1 h), a granite twin-spire Gothic church.
- Afternoon on Shamian Island among the old consulate buildings and banyan trees.
- At dusk, up the Canton Tower to the 488 m Baiyun Starry Sky deck, then board at Dashatou pier for the night cruise.
- Stairs: a few steps at the cathedral entrance; the tower is by lift.
- Travel: ~1 h spread across the day.
- Rest: teahouse break in Yongqingfang and a shaded bench stop on Shamian.
- Kids: the cruise is the favourite part — sit on the open deck for the light show.

**Gentle plan** — start 09:30, about 4,500 steps, highest point 488 m.

- Later start. A shorter loop of Yongqingfang with a teahouse stop, the cathedral exterior and ground floor only, then a flat slow walk on Shamian with a long shaded break.
- Canton Tower by lift, and a seat by the window on the cruise.
- Stairs: almost none — lifts to the tower deck.
- Travel: ~1 h spread across the day.

**Meals:** not included — own arrangement. Local suggestions: Cantonese morning tea (har gow, siu mai), Xiguan beef offal, wonton noodles, boat congee.
**Where you stay:** Guangzhou, sleeping altitude 20 m.
**Good to know:** the tower security queue is longest around sunset; the cruise pier is a 15-minute walk from the tower.

### Day 2: Shunde — Qinghui Garden, Huagai Road Food Street & Shunfengshan Park

**Standard plan** — start 08:30, about 7,000 steps, highest point 30 m.

- Drive to Shunde and spend about 2 h in Qinghui Garden, one of Guangdong's four great gardens, with its ponds, corridors and dense planting.
- Lunch is a graze along Huagai Road food street.
- Afternoon at Shunfengshan Park for the huge paifang archway and the lakeside greenway, then back to Guangzhou.
- Stairs: steps and stone bridges inside Qinghui Garden.
- Travel: Guangzhou → Shunde ~1 h each way.
- Rest: a full sit-down lunch break on Huagai Road, then tea in the garden.
- Kids: double-skin milk pudding is a safe bet for children; most stalls sell small portions.

**Gentle plan** — start 09:00, about 4,000 steps, highest point 30 m.

- Later start. Qinghui Garden at a slow pace with rests in the corridors, a sit-down lunch on Huagai Road instead of standing at stalls, and only the archway plus a short stretch of the lake at Shunfengshan — the rest by car.
- Stairs: few; flat garden paths can be used instead.
- Travel: Guangzhou → Shunde ~1 h each way.

**Meals:** hotel breakfast; Shunde double-skin milk, ginger milk curd, Lunjiao rice cake, Chencun rice noodles, roast pork, raw fish salad.
**Where you stay:** Guangzhou, sleeping altitude 20 m.
**Good to know:** the food street is crowded from 12:00 to 13:30; raw freshwater fish salad is not suitable for pregnant guests or very young children.

### Day 3: Foshan — Nanfeng Guzao Kiln, Ancestral Temple & Lion Dance

**Standard plan** — start 08:30, about 6,500 steps, highest point 40 m.

- Morning at Nanfeng Guzao (~2 h), the oldest surviving wood-fired dragon kiln, still firing after 500 years; watch the pottery craft and try the wheel yourself.
- Afternoon at Foshan Ancestral Temple with its dense roof sculpture, then the lion dance show on the high poles and the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall.
- Stairs: some steps at the kiln slope and between temple courtyards.
- Travel: Guangzhou → Foshan ~1 h each way.
- Rest: shaded courtyard seating in the Ancestral Temple between shows.
- Kids: the high-pole lion dance is the highlight; children can try the potter's wheel afterwards.

**Gentle plan** — start 09:00, about 3,500 steps, highest point 40 m.

- Later start. Kiln site and a seated throwing demonstration, with the pottery workshop optional. Go early to the Ancestral Temple for a front seat at the lion dance, then only the main hall of the Huang Feihong Memorial Hall and a long rest in the courtyard.
- Stairs: almost none; benches around the temple courtyards.
- Travel: Guangzhou → Foshan ~1 h each way.

**Meals:** hotel breakfast; Foshan Mang Gong biscuit, nine-layer cake, zhuhou chicken, braised pickled pork knuckle.
**Where you stay:** Guangzhou, sleeping altitude 20 m.
**Good to know:** lion dance drums are loud and the show runs on fixed times — check the day's schedule on arrival.

### Day 4: Guangzhou — Yuexiu Park, Nanyue King Museum, Chen Clan Hall & Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall

**Standard plan** — start 09:00, about 7,500 steps, highest point 70 m.

- Yuexiu Park for the Five Rams statue and the view over the city, then the Nanyue King Museum tomb gallery (~2 h) with the jade burial suit.
- Afternoon at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, with its wood, brick and stone carving and ridge pottery, and finish at the octagonal Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
- Stairs: slope and steps up Yuexiu Hill; stairs between museum floors.
- Travel: ~40 min in the city across the day.
- Rest: lunch and a long sit near Yuexiu Park before the afternoon halls.
- Kids: the jade burial suit in the tomb gallery is the thing children remember.

**Gentle plan** — start 09:30, about 4,000 steps, highest point 70 m.

- Later start. Five Rams statue from the flat entrance path, no hill climb. Nanyue King Museum by lift with bench stops, the main hall and courtyard of the Chen Clan Hall only, and a seated rest in the Memorial Hall.
- Stairs: lifts in both museums; stay on the flat lower paths instead of the hill.
- Travel: ~40 min in the city across the day.

**Meals:** hotel breakfast; Cantonese roast goose and char siu, slow-simmered soup, dim sum at an old-style Cantonese restaurant.
**Where you stay:** Guangzhou, sleeping altitude 20 m.
**Good to know:** museums in Guangzhou usually close on Mondays, so the order of the day may swap; the tomb gallery is cool and dim inside.

### Day 5: Free Time in the City & Airport Transfer

**Standard plan** — start 09:00, about 3,000 steps, highest point 20 m.

- A slow morning and free time near the hotel for last shopping or a final dim sum meal; transfer to Baiyun Airport according to flight time, about 3 hours before departure.
- Stairs: none planned.
- Travel: hotel → Baiyun Airport ~1 h.
- Rest: late check-out is requested where the flight allows.

**Gentle plan** — start 09:30, about 2,000 steps, highest point 20 m.

- Stay close to the hotel, pack with help from the driver, and leave a little earlier so check-in is unhurried.
- Stairs: none planned.
- Travel: hotel → Baiyun Airport ~1 h.

**Meals:** hotel breakfast; a last bowl of wonton noodles or a dim sum brunch before the airport.
**Where you stay:** home after the transfer.
**Good to know:** Baiyun Airport is large — allow time for the walk to the gate.
