## Is this trip right for you?

### Great for

- Families travelling with grandparents and children: late starts, private car between sights, one hotel for all four nights
- Travellers who like city street life, old neighbourhoods and night photography
- Anyone who wants Chongqing city and the Wulong karst in five days without planning transport themselves

### Think twice if

- Travellers who want five or six sights a day and a tight schedule
- Guests who need step-free access throughout: Baixiangju has no lift and the gorge boardwalks have many steps
- People who dislike heat, humidity and hills — Chongqing is hot and steep in summer

## Trip highlights

- Baixiangju: a 24-storey residential block with no lift, entrances on floors 1, 10 and 15
- The Yangtze cable car, running since 1987, 1,166 m across the river in about 4.5 minutes
- Tiansheng Sanqiao and Longshuixia, core of the South China Karst World Natural Heritage site

## Day by day

### Day 1: Arrive in Chongqing, free evening

**Stay:** Chongqing · sleeping altitude 250 m

**Standard plan** — start arranged to your actual flight landing time; about 3,000 steps; highest point 250 m. The driver waits at arrivals with your name and takes you to the hotel. The rest of the day is yours: walk from Jiefangbei down to Hongyadong for the first night view, or simply rest at the hotel.

**Gentle plan** — about 1,500 steps; highest point 250 m. Same private transfer. No sightseeing after check-in: dinner near the hotel and an early night.

- **Stairs:** almost none
- **Travel:** airport to the city hotel ~40 min
- **Meals:** own arrangement · a bowl of Chongqing xiaomian noodles near the hotel, or hotpot in Jiefangbei
- **Rest:** rest at the hotel after check-in
- **Kids:** keep the first evening short; children can nap in the car

### Day 2: Baixiangju, Yangtze Cable Car, Raffles City & Hongyadong

**Stay:** Chongqing · sleeping altitude 250 m

**Standard plan** — start 09:00; about 8,000 steps; highest point 300 m. 09:00 at Baixiangju: shoot the cable car passing the tower from the Building 3 corridor, and look into the old state-run shop and the mahjong teahouse. Then drive to the south station and ride the cable car north, choosing the right-hand window. Lunch and a cool break inside Raffles City, with the option of the 250 m Crystal Bridge deck over the two rivers. Late afternoon at Hongyadong, and after dark take the full view from Qiansimen Bridge or the riverbank park.

**Gentle plan** — start 09:30; about 4,000 steps; highest point 300 m. Photograph the corridor at Baixiangju and move on; ride the cable car seated the whole way; lunch and a long air-conditioned break in Raffles City, then the observation deck by lift; in the evening only look at Hongyadong from the far bank park instead of walking through the crowds.

- **Stairs:** standard — Baixiangju is a 24-storey block without a lift, you stay on the corridor decks; Hongyadong has many slopes and steps. Gentle — almost none: Baixiangju ground floor and corridor deck only, Hongyadong exterior only
- **Travel:** about 40 min of driving in total inside the city
- **Meals:** hotel breakfast; lunch and dinner own arrangement · maoxuewang and laziji around Chaotianmen; Raffles City also has mild soups and noodle shops
- **Rest:** lunch and a one-hour break inside Raffles City, out of the afternoon heat
- **Kids:** keep hands inside the cable car; dress children in bright colours for the evening crowds
- **Note:** Baixiangju is a lived-in block — keep voices low and do not block the stairwells. Hongyadong is very crowded after the lights come on.

### Day 3: Chongqing Zoo, Eling Erchang, Liziba Monorail & Guanyinqiao

**Stay:** Chongqing · sleeping altitude 250 m

**Standard plan** — start 08:00; about 8,000 steps; highest point 300 m. 08:30 at Chongqing Zoo — pandas are liveliest at breakfast time in the panda house. Midday at Eling Erchang, the 1937 banknote printing works turned design park and a filming spot for a well-known Chinese road movie. Afternoon at the Liziba viewing deck for the monorail running through the apartment block. Evening free in Guanyinqiao for shopping and street food.

**Gentle plan** — start 09:00; about 4,500 steps; highest point 300 m. Inside the zoo take the park shuttle bus straight to the panda house, then leave. Coffee and the river view from the Eling Erchang terrace, the Liziba deck by escalator, and a seated dinner in a Guanyinqiao mall.

- **Stairs:** standard — the Liziba viewing deck has escalators and steps; Eling Erchang is on slopes. Gentle — escalators at the Liziba deck; only the flat main paths at Eling Erchang
- **Travel:** about 1 h of driving in total inside the city
- **Meals:** hotel breakfast; lunch and dinner own arrangement · Guanyinqiao food street: suanlafen noodles, grilled brain, bobo chicken, lianggao and bingfen
- **Rest:** one-hour break at an Eling Erchang café, or back to the hotel at midday
- **Kids:** the panda house is the highlight for children; the zoo is large, a stroller helps
- **Note:** the Liziba deck has little shade — take the photo and move on. Watch your belongings in Guanyinqiao at night.

### Day 4: Wulong: Tiansheng Sanqiao & Longshuixia Gorge

**Stay:** Chongqing · sleeping altitude 250 m

**Standard plan** — start 07:30; about 10,000 steps; highest point 1,200 m. 07:30 to the station, high-speed train to Wulong, shuttle bus to Tiansheng Sanqiao. The 80 m lift drops you into the valley; walk the boardwalk under the Tianlong, Qinglong and Heilong bridges and past the Tang-dynasty Tianfu Post Station. After lunch, Longshuixia Difeng: boardwalk down past the Milky Way waterfall, out by lift. Evening train back to Chongqing.

**Gentle plan** — start 08:00; about 5,500 steps; highest point 1,200 m. Start on a later train. At Tiansheng Sanqiao take the lift down and walk only as far as the Tianfu Post Station, then ride the scenic electric cart out to avoid the uphill. At the Difeng walk the first stretch of boardwalk to the waterfall and come back up by lift, with the rest of the time resting in the visitor centre.

- **Stairs:** standard — 80 m sightseeing lift down into the gorge, steps on the valley floor and on the way out; the Difeng boardwalk is a long run of steps downhill. Gentle — lifts up and down at both sights; only the flattest stretch of boardwalk on the valley floor
- **Travel:** Chongqing–Wulong by car ~1.5–2 h, Wulong South Station–Fairy Mountain Visitor Centre shuttle ~40 min, ~20 min between the two sights; the gentle version uses the same route on a slightly later train
- **Meals:** hotel breakfast; lunch and dinner own arrangement · in Fairy Mountain town: mutton hotpot, bowl-by-bowl mutton, Yangjiao dried tofu, fern-root noodles — mostly mild broth
- **Rest:** rest in the visitor centres and on the train; no activities after returning to Chongqing
- **Kids:** hold hands on the valley boardwalk; the Difeng path is slippery, no running
- **Note:** the Difeng boardwalk is wet most of the year — grippy shoes are essential. The valley floor is 5–8 °C cooler than the city, bring a light jacket. Long walking day.

### Day 5: Free morning in Chongqing, transfer to the airport

**Stay:** home · sleeping altitude 0 m

**Standard plan** — start arranged to your return flight time; about 2,000 steps; highest point 250 m. Wake up without an alarm. After breakfast, shop nearby or pick up souvenirs in Jiefangbei; the driver takes you to the airport according to your flight time.

**Gentle plan** — about 1,000 steps; highest point 250 m. A slow breakfast, then wait in the hotel lobby until the driver comes for the airport.

- **Stairs:** almost none
- **Travel:** hotel to the airport ~40 min
- **Meals:** hotel breakfast; lunch and dinner own arrangement · one last bowl of Chongqing xiaomian noodles before the flight
- **Rest:** hotel lobby before departure
- **Kids:** pack the children's passports and toys together so nothing is left behind
- **Note:** check passports, chargers and belongings before leaving the room

Steps and drive times are estimates for planning. Altitudes are from public data. Your guide adjusts on the day.

## Meals & local food

Breakfast is included at every hotel. Lunches and dinners are booked by your guide and paid at the table.

**Chongqing:** beef-tallow hotpot, Chongqing xiaomian noodles, suanlafen, maoxuewang, laziji, chaoshou wontons. Order a divided pot if you are not used to heat — local "mild" is still spicy. Guanyinqiao food street is best after 6 pm, a few stalls at a time.

**Wulong:** mutton hotpot, bowl-by-bowl mutton, Yangjiao dried tofu, fern-root noodles, free-range chicken soup. Wulong mutton is usually served in a clear, mild broth — good for children and older guests. Eat lunch in Fairy Mountain town; there is little choice inside the scenic areas.

**Dietary needs**

- Your driver-guide explains your needs to each restaurant in Chinese
